Henry Turner South Pavilion

Henry Turner South in Footscray is a versatile sporting reserve, hosting various local competitions. It is home to clubs such as the Footscray Rugby Union Club in winter, and the Western Crusaders Gridiron Club and Footscray Edgewater Cricket Club in summer. Adjacent to Footscray Park and Victoria University’s Footscray Park Campus, this reserve serves the needs of the local community and sports clubs as a dedicated facility.
The new pavilion will offer users a spacious multipurpose social area, a meeting room, a commercial kitchen, and four generously sized change rooms with gender-neutral facilities. These amenities will cater to the needs of local competitions, providing an enhanced experience for participants and ensuring inclusivity. The structure makes use of a steel frame, and incorporates a large cantilevered roof around most of the perimeter.

$5m
Challenges include dealing with 2.5m of imported fill over 2.5m of natural fill and contending with a ground water level of 0.5m, which had implications for the foundation design and construction. Moreover, the intricate building form and substantial cantilevers, some spanning in two directions, presented difficulties in fitting within the narrow architectural profile. However, the final aspect ratio of these cantilevers to the final architectural profiles wrapping around the primary structural frame work perfectly.

ANDREW GALL, Director

Argall was founded in 2017 by Andrew Gall, an engineer with a passion for complex design and breaking the mould. His work experience as a senior structural engineer across a variety of project disciplines made him realise there was a real need for a bespoke people and service-oriented structural engineering consultancy that would inspire sustainability practices and innovation often lacking in big companies.

This is over and above his experience in traditional procurement roles, his work with builders in the design and construct field, managing projects in sport, tertiary education, the arts and zoological fields, as well as community, commercial, residential and multi- residential enterprises. With such a wealth of knowledge and understanding of different design methodologies, he has the expertise to challenge the status quo in his new venture.
