Chelsea Primary School

The new facilities at Chelsea PS includes a versatile room designed to accommodate a wide range of activities, events and performances. The build will also include a new art room and music room, providing dedicated spaces for creative endeavors. There will also be spacious decks that overlook the schools play areas, offering an additional outdoor learning environment. These new facilities can be used together or separately, providing flexibility for various activities allowing students to enjoy both indoor and outdoor learning opportunities.
The project featured a hybrid steel and timber roof structure, combining steel portal frames for the larger area and timber trusses for amenities such as the kitchen to maximise cost efficiency . The ground floor utilized a raft slab with suspended panels supported by ground beams, and specific areas were set down to accommodate a sprung floating floor in the multipurpose area.

Despite a limited budget, our team successfully worked with the architect and client to maximize the value provided for the project. The central location of the construction site within the school posed challenges, particularly with the existing stormwater drainage infrastructure. Resolving the stormwater drainage for the new building required careful consideration due to complications arising from the proximity of ground water to the soakage tank. Despite favorable ground conditions, these design complexities had to be addressed. Additionally, integrating the general design of the building and external works among the existing site services proved to be another significant challenge foe us to overcome.

ANDREW GALL, Director

Argall was founded in 2017 by Andrew Gall, an engineer with a passion for complex design and breaking the mould. His work experience as a senior structural engineer across a variety of project disciplines made him realise there was a real need for a bespoke people and service-oriented structural engineering consultancy that would inspire sustainability practices and innovation often lacking in big companies.

This is over and above his experience in traditional procurement roles, his work with builders in the design and construct field, managing projects in sport, tertiary education, the arts and zoological fields, as well as community, commercial, residential and multi- residential enterprises. With such a wealth of knowledge and understanding of different design methodologies, he has the expertise to challenge the status quo in his new venture.
