Box Hill North Primary School

Box Hill North Primary’s new Junior Learning Hub won the 2023 Victorian Architecture Award for Educational Architecture. The purpose-built facility combines the comforts of home with welcoming materials and ample natural light. The design considers the local context and provides eight flexible classrooms and dedicated workspaces, allowing teachers to easily adapt learning environments.
The construction of the building involved a shift from a steel and timber hybrid frame to a predominantly steel frame. A stiffened raft slab was utilized on the sloping site, with limited height retention at the rear. The architectural form was achieved using steel trusses, allowing for impressive cantilevered eaves where masonry was suspended over glazing and eaves.

With construction during the COVID-19 pandemic, supply chain disruptions caused challenges in sourcing the materials, particularly timber. As a result, continual redesigns were necessary to maintain project progress, as the team maximized the available resources. These adjustments involved modifying connection details, which became intricate in areas where different structural materials were combined.

ANDREW GALL, Director

Argall was founded in 2017 by Andrew Gall, an engineer with a passion for complex design and breaking the mould. His work experience as a senior structural engineer across a variety of project disciplines made him realise there was a real need for a bespoke people and service-oriented structural engineering consultancy that would inspire sustainability practices and innovation often lacking in big companies.

This is over and above his experience in traditional procurement roles, his work with builders in the design and construct field, managing projects in sport, tertiary education, the arts and zoological fields, as well as community, commercial, residential and multi- residential enterprises. With such a wealth of knowledge and understanding of different design methodologies, he has the expertise to challenge the status quo in his new venture.
