Maitland Road

Working with TRG and the Newcastle City Council, Argall has completed the structural design for a mixed-use development at Maitland Road in Mayfield. The site occupies 4000 sqm on the major arterial roadway linking Newcastle CBD to surrounding suburbs. Containing a BP service station, the fast food outlet Oporto and a laundromat the site will provide a fully equipped rest area for passing vehicles.
The site featured two structures, each utilizing a similar structural system. The roof design comprised a structural steel frame, incorporating varying fascia trusses to create architectural forms and signage. These steel frames are supported by steel columns and precast panels, which also formed the walls of the structure. The foundations were a combination of stiffened rafts on ground and suspended concrete rafts supported by screw piles. There was also a cantilevering traditional structural steel fuel canopy, designed with a steel roof that bridged back to the main building.

During the construction, we encountered challenging ground conditions that required a customized design response. To address this we suspended both sections of the building’s foundations and specific areas of external pavements to accommodate truck movements. Another key challenge involved resolving the roof drainage within the fuel canopy. To overcome this, we collaborated closely with TRG, successfully workshopping the design to devise an effective solution.

ANDREW GALL, Director

Argall was founded in 2017 by Andrew Gall, an engineer with a passion for complex design and breaking the mould. His work experience as a senior structural engineer across a variety of project disciplines made him realise there was a real need for a bespoke people and service-oriented structural engineering consultancy that would inspire sustainability practices and innovation often lacking in big companies.

This is over and above his experience in traditional procurement roles, his work with builders in the design and construct field, managing projects in sport, tertiary education, the arts and zoological fields, as well as community, commercial, residential and multi- residential enterprises. With such a wealth of knowledge and understanding of different design methodologies, he has the expertise to challenge the status quo in his new venture.
